I was feeling a little overwhelmed with classes yesterday and decided to take a little time to work on a quick casual paint job. The conversions on the dreadnought itself were done some years ago by a friend of mine. I only needed to redo the close combat arm and fix up a few little things and it was on to painting. The base isn't painted yet, but I wanted to share him while the techniques used were still fresh in my mind.
I'm pretty pleased with the end result really. The total time spent so far is about 3 hours or so.
Color breakdown:
Primer: Black
Rust: A coat of Scorched Brown was followed by sponge coats of Vermin Fur and Fiery Orange. The Fiery Orange was used very sparingly. A quick drybrush of Boltgun Metal to finish.
Green: These areas were first painted with the Rust technique minus the Boltgun Metal. The areas were then sprayed with a light mist of hairspray and sprinkled fairly heavily with salt. Once the hairspray was completely dry, a hairdryer sped up this process considerably, the area was coated with a layer of watered down Gretchin Green. When this was completely dry, again with the hairdryer, the salt was brush off with the liberal application of an old toothbrush. This ended up removing quite a bit more paint than I had intended so I went back in with some very watered down Gretchin Green. This was painted on in a blotchy pattern to keep the areas from looking too smooth. Once dry, I washed the all the green areas with Devlan Mud followed by a little bit of edge highlighting with straight Gretchin Green. This seems a bit long winded, but was really pretty simple and not terribly time consuming.
Brass Areas (The front plate, Nurgle mark on the lascannon arm, and the CCW): A thorough coat of Boltgun Metal was followed by two washed of Gryphonne Sepia. Some watered down Hawk Turquoise was added in a few select places to represent patina.
Bones: A layer of Dheneb Stone was followed by a quick highlight with Skull White. A wash of Gryphonne Sepia finishes the areas.
